Northern Brewer

Raised in 1934 from Canterbury Golding, crossed with a male seedling from Brewer's Gold. The bine is red and the fruiting laterals comparitively short. Growth is moderate, and consequently some growers train three bines to a string. The bine does not naturally encircle the string so readily as that of other varieties, so it requires more hand training. It prefers the heavier types of hop soil and needs a good supply of soil moisture. The cones, which are of medium size, retain much of their green colour when ripe, and not infrequently produce leaves amung their bracts. The yield is good, and the hops are of high quality. Grown in Europe and America as a dual-purpose hop, but the aroma is mellow, so is mainly used for bittering in combination with other hops.

Availability

Plants in 2 litre pots are available from late May until September, for UK mainland delivery only due to transport implications. Bare root hops plants are available for wider distribution from November.
